Why was this training created?
Spinning Babies® recognizes that more than good techniques are needed to shift birth culture. As professionals, we deserve time to practice what we are going to bring back to our communities. Birth Skills Training offers a space to reflect, practice, and reshape birth culture. More than mastering techniques, it’s about bringing your values and wisdom to your work and communities.
What is physiological birth, and why does it matter?
Physiological birth is the body’s innate process for childbirth and the neurobiological catalyst for deep and abiding attachment and bonding. Normal birth reveals itself in a wide range of normal variations. Physiological birth is not just about avoiding intervention– it’s about understanding when interventions are necessary and life-saving. Learning to trust and support the birthing process can lead to better outcomes and reduce unnecessary interventions.

How is Birth Skills different from Aware Practitioner?
There are several key differences between Birth Skills and Aware Practitioner training.
Have you taken a Spinning Babies® Foundation Workshop already? No problem, you are more than welcome to join! Some of the training will act as a refresher of the foundations of the Spinning Babies® approach. You’ll also receive updated information and the chance to deepen your integration as well as explore your own physiology in order to be with your clients in theirs.
Do you have a background in therapeutic bodywork? If you work in a profession that does not directly include bodywork training (nursing, some types of physicians), you will benefit from the Birth Skills Training’s slower, more foundational approach to teaching bodywork skills and using intuitive sense.
The Aware Practitioner Training is designed for manual practitioners and focuses on bodywork and how to use bodywork on clients during pregnancy, Birth Skills focuses on labor and birth.
Is your practice with birthing people? Directly before, during, and just after birth? Many labor and delivery nurses long for more physiological insight and skill, beyond what is generally taught in conventional obstetrics. Nurses, midwives, doulas, and even doctors benefit from a retreat into a dedicated space for exploring the Spinning Babies® approach.
This training adds time for learning to mirror our heart-brain connection to the moments around birth. The Spinning Babies® Birth Skills Training teaches the approach and techniques in our Foundations curriculum but focuses more on labor and birth.
The Aware Practitioner Training guides the class through step-by-step techniques so that fetal positioning concerns (posterior, breech, transverse lie) can be addressed for their clients without manually turning the baby. Aware Practitioner Training has a substantial focus on advanced techniques for the prenatal period, though they can be used in labor.
How are Aware Practitioner and Birth Skills events the same?
Both start at the beginning with the ethics and nuances of touch and embodied consent. If you have never been trained how to “listen with your hands with touch” then this training will inform your practice.
Both present the Spinning Babies® approach for easier birth and physiologic practice skills.
